Soccer comes from an English term actually, Association Football. This was commonly referred to as Assoc and people who played it were referred to as soccers. This is all because back in the day there were no pro sports therefore no official rules for any sport. As leagues started then the different leagues set out rules. Association Football outline the rules that are now used in Soccer, the Rugby Football Union made rugby. These were both originally called football. Gridiron Football is the proper name for American Football and it was derived from Rugby hence the similar scoring and gameplay, Gaelic Football (which I play) has its own rules in Ireland, and Aussie Rules Football in Australia. As a general rule whatever the most popular sport of this type is in a given country is referred to as Football. They call it Soccer in Ireland because Gaelic Football is the national sport and that is called Football, same thing goes for Gridiron/American Football. Also there is evidence that the name football has nothing to do etymologically with kicking the ball but rather that you play the sport on foot and not on a horse like polo.

FIFA = Federation International Football Association. World Governing Body of Football.
CAF = Confederation of African Football.
AFC = Asian Football Confederation.
CONCACAF = Confederation of North, Central and Caribbean Association Football.
CONMEBOL = Confederation Sudamerica de Futbol = South America.
OFC = Oceania Football Confederation.
UEFA = Union of the European Football Association.

I don't see the word soccer anywhere.
The word soccer is a slang name for the game, not the correct name.
Maybe the American game should be called the NGL = National Gridiron League. That would be more appropriate.

Because they already have a sport called football, American Football. And they call it football. So they use the word soccer, so they don´t confuse people. :D

there's an article about the history of the word "soccer" rather than football. but i think americans use the word "soccer" to better define the sport so as not to get it confused with american football. having two sports with the same name is difficult to identify if asked what you played. so instead of saying "i play football", the original game where you actually PLAY WITH YOUR FEET, like everyone else around the world would say it, americans say "i play soccer." also football didnt catch on in america until sometime after "american football" was invented. so there you go.

there's the article on the bottom:

NO no! It is the rest of the world that is off kilter! FOOTBALL is American Football -- Peyton Manning, the Saints, the Superbowl! It is the rest of the world who calls soccer 'football!'

Ditto the metric system. If God had wanted us to use the metric system, He wouldn't have made a yardstick 36 inches long!

We didn't invent that term. What would we call football? Run-down-the-field-and-get-a-touchdown-ball? We use the metric system too, apparently you never went to school. Actually, half the drink isle is in metric. We aren't the only country that uses the Customary measurements. A measurement is a measurement.

You are a complainer.
You are stereotpical.
You need a life.

In America, "football" means American football. That's why the other kind of football is referred to as "soccer".

The U.S. have been crapping on everyone ever since the Revolutionary War and any time the world does something the U.S. wants to be retarded and does something else. Why don't we us the metric system?, it is a lot easier than saying for example 7/8 of an inch. Metric, 5.7cm (easy). We should start movement, the U.S. should no longer cater to the drunk NFL fans and rightfully call "soccer", FOOTBALL.
