Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes says he is still confident of making the Champions League quarter-finals after his side’s 1-0 loss to Basel.

A Valentin Stocker goal with five minutes remaining was enough to give Basel the honours in the round-of-16 first-leg tie at St Jakob-Park, but Heynckes insists his team will respond in the second leg in Munich on March 13.

“It’s an uncomfortable situation, but I have been in these situations before in my coaching career,” Heynckes said.

“It was a balanced match with good chances for either side. We lost 1-0 and now we’re not in an ideal position ahead of the second leg. In the build-up to their goal, we didn’t attack aggressively enough.”

“We are making a lot of mistakes. The alarm bells are ringing, though we have a second leg and can still correct this result. It is certainly possible to beat Basel 2-0 at home.”

“At the beginning of the game we had two huge chances and should have taken the lead. In these matches you need to make the most of your chances.”

Basel coach Heiko Vogel was delighted with the result and said his team will take a lot of confidence into the second leg.

“At the break I told the lads that we needed to make more of our possession,” Vogel said.

“Now we are in a great position ahead of the second leg. My team have unbelievable willpower, a good sense of who they are and a healthy self-confidence.”

“We’re aware that this is only a partial success.”

“However, we have a perfect harmony. Everyday we enjoy the work we do and that will pay off at some point.”

“This victory is one thing; the overall result another. But we are capable of scoring away goals and if we do that in Munich it will be very difficult for Bayern.”

Manchester City sensation John Guidetti has edged closer to an international debut, after making the Sweden squad for their Croatia friendly.

Guidetti – currently on-loan at Feyenoord – was named in the 22-man squad for next week’s clash in Zagreb on Wednesday.

The prolific 19-year-old has achieved hero status in Rotterdam with Feyenoord after firing three hat-tricks, including one over bitter rivals Ajax in January.

Despite being sent-off in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with RKC Waalwijk, Sweden coach Erik Hamren said he feels that the youngster is ready to play at the highest level of international football.

“He clearly deserves his place after what he’s achieved for his club,” Hamren told the Swedish football association’s official website.

Guidetti will take his place alongside another Dutch-based forward in PSV Eindhoven’s Ola Toivonen and AC Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The friendly will serve as a step-up in Sweden’s preparations for Euro 2012 in mid-year.

Hamren’s team are drawn in a tough group that includes England, France and co-hosts Ukraine.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill felt his side got the basics wrong in their 3-1 Champions League loss to Napoli on Tuesday.

Cahill – signed from Bolton in the January transfer window – was disappointed that his side made rudimentary errors, which allowed Napoli to win well in the first leg of the round-of-16 match.

“The most disappointing thing today was that the goals came from a lot of long balls, which is bread and butter really for people like myself,” Cahill said.

“If you were getting cut open then it would be different. We were frustrating them early doors, they made a mistake and we got the goal. We should have shut the door from then.”

“For some reason it seemed really open after that instead of really solid, which we should have been. We should have just shut the door and made everything compact and gone in at half-time 1-0 up, but it wasn’t to be. Like I said, we were too easily cut open tonight.”

Juan Mata was the man who gave Chelsea the lead after he benefited from Paulo Cannavaro’s mistake at the back.

And the Spaniard feels his goal has kept the English Premier League outfit alive in the tie ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

“There was a bad bounce for the centre-back and I just had to score,” Mata said.

“It was an important goal, but with their three goals, we have to win 2-0 at least. I think we are able to do it.”

“It was a good start 0-1, but we didn’t keep the score. I think an away goal was important for us, but they are a very strong team here in (Stadio) San Paolo and now we have to win the second leg.”

Nigeria Premier League executive Owolabi Wopa said that he remains confident the league’s organising body will improve.

Wopa said that he believes all the problems in the NPL will come to an end soon, after the national football federation and the Premier League were both dissolved by a court in January following a dispute.

“I am sure that we are going to settle everything that needs to be settled because we must give our players and officials the enabling environment to do well and enjoy the game in this country,” Wopa told Goal.com.

He appealed to the league’s clubs to pay the indemnities of match officials, as the league tries to get back on it’s feet.

“It is a situation we cannot help because football must not suffer, so we decided to allow the game to continue,” he said.

“It’s an unfortunate situation that the league has found itself in this season. But as someone who is concerned about the situation I can only plead with the clubs to continue to pay indemnities to the referees.”

“In time past, clubs pay match indemnities. But at that time, we did not have many problems like we do these days. All I know is that we are going to resolve every problem that we have encountered.”

“What is happening should not be blown out of proportion because the league will surely come out of these problems a better league that everybody will be proud of.”

Cesena have announced the departure of coach Daniele Arrigoni with immediate effect.

Arrigoni had just over four months of his contract left to run, but the club issued a brief statement on their official website on Monday announcing he had left the Stadio Dino Manuzzi by mutual consent.

The 52-year-old took charge of his hometown club in November but Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Serie A leaders AC Milan, coupled with Novara’s draw with Atalanta, resulted in Cesena dropping to last place in the table.

Arrigoni took the post to replace the sacked Marco Giampaolo, who had only been at the helm for six months.

Cesena, who have lost four of their last five league games, travel to Chievo on Sunday.
